Yesterday, Strength of Place Village hosted a site tour for interested and curious community members. Close to 40 residents of the neighborhood took turns walking through the site, with interpretation available in three languages (Spanish, Somali and Vietnamese). Participants of the tour were not allowed on site if they wore open-toed shoes (for their safety). Our CDA community builder, Ian Dapiaoen, let a gentlemen borrow his shoes so he can participate on the tour. The man was very thankful to have seen the site, which is projected to be completed mid-September.

White Center Promise is a long-term effort aimed at eradicating poverty in White Center. It will create a support system that will lead to student and family success and bring about social change. Our goal is that all children in White Center will have a healthy and successful life from birth to college and beyond.

Apprenticeship & Non-Traditional Employment for Women (ANEW) offers part-time, high quality training to help women enter non-traditional careers in construction trades and manufacturing.

There is an upcoming training opportunity for women ready move into high-wage employment. This is a great opportunity for women who want to change careers but need to keep their current jobs.

The course is FREE* for most attendees and funded by government grants and industry donations.

The next class begins Monday, August 15, 2011 and is apart-time (Monday - Wednesday) program. This schedule allows people to transition from a low-wage industry to a new, rewarding career path.

A large component of the program includes community service learning with our partner, Seattle-King County Habitat for Humanity. Students will have a range of direct, hands-on experience and earn industry credentials. Also, industry and social leaders will help students learn financial, planning and life skills.
You can learn more about this at the White Center CDA office: ANEW is doing outreach and orientation at the CDA office on the first and third Wednesday at noon.

What is STRENGTH OF PLACE VILLAGE Apartments?

Strength of Place Village (SOPV) will be an affordable housing community for individuals and families in White Center. SOPV will be an attractive, green-built and safe community that residents will be proud to call home. SOPV will be comprised of three separate buildings, each a mixture of townhome and flat-style apartments. Each apartment will have its own exterior entrance with either a small patio or deck as you enter. There will be an on-site resident manager as well as abundant play areas for children.

Community Outreach Coordinator

Join Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle as a part-time outreach coordinator in White Center! We have an immediate opening for an energetic individual who can rally the White Center community around the White Center Cultural Community Center Garden.

This position will be responsible for finding plot holders, supervising work parties, soliciting for in kind donations, managing event logistics for a Harvest Festival, recruiting teachers and speakers for courses and in general generate support for the garden as well as increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables in our community. Tasks will also include but not be limited to getting supplies and materials, outreach coordination, organizing volunteer tasks, and other such duties. In this part-time temporary position, you’ll have an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment and make a positive difference for disadvantaged individuals in our community.

The hours will average 12 hours per week for 20 weeks at a pay of $15 per hour.

You have or are:

18 years of age or over

Edible gardening experience preferred

Community organizing experience preferred

Extremely organized and detail-oriented - with excellent follow-through and communication skills
