Promise Neighborhoods is a place-based initiative created by the federal Department of Education and inspired by the Harlem Children’s Zone. The vision of this program is that all children and youth growing up in a Promise Neighborhood have access to a continuum of great schools and strong systems of family and community support that will prepare them to attain an excellent education and successfully transition to college and a career. The purpose of Promise Neighborhoods is to significantly improve the educational and developmental outcomes of children and youth in our most distressed communities, and to transform those communities.

August 2nd, 2011 in Promise Neighborhood Videos, Video | No Comments

On Friday, July 22nd, approximately 400 White Center families converged on Greenbridge Plaza for the first ever White Center Promise Summer Celebration.  White Center resident and School Board President, Sili Savusa was the emcee, leading the crowd through chants, musical entertainment, and a delicious meal donated by  the King County Housing Authority and El Paisano.  Early-bird registrants received backpacks for school and the new turquoise “I heart White Center” T-shirt.  Families participated in the fun, interactive Continuum of Solutions game that helped parents reflect on how to assist their children along the pathway from birth through college and a career.  Interim Superintendent, Alan Spicciati, shook children’s hands as they “graduated from college” and had their picture taken with him.  Members of the White Center Promise Core Partners from Southwest Youth and Family Services, the White Center Community Development Association, and Highline Public Schools, were all on hand to help residents learn how to participate further in the White Center Promise initiative.

Above is a video from Sept. 2010 about Promise Neighborhoods. The White Center CDA, in partnership with the Highline School District and Southwest Youth and Family Services, is currently organizing around Promise Neighborhood planning efforts to happen in White Center, and we are currently working on “The White Center Promise” on our website. This “cradle to college” concept is being communicated to partners and individuals via 3 different workgroups, community outreach, events and more . You can find out all about our efforts by visiting:

The page is currently under construction but we will have a lot more updates in May.

For more information about “The White Center Promise”, please contact Laurie Bohm, Promise Neighborhoods project director, at lbohm@swyfs.org.
