White Center Holds Community Summit on Saturday, December 3
Multicultural Forum Includes Free Workshops on Housing, Jobs, Health, and Education

White Center - On Saturday, December 3, the White Center Community Development Association (CDA) is proud to host the 10th Annual Community Summit - an event that celebrates the White Center neighborhood and the many efforts of residents, organizations, and community partners to connect to resources and one another. This year’s theme - “Building Neighborhood Equity” - is driven by the concerns that local residents have raised about housing, healthcare, employment, and education in 2011.  The Summit will feature workshops in each of these areas.

During the time it will take you to read this email, 5 women will be affected by domestic violence - that’s 145 people every hour. Sadly, 1 in 4 women will be affected during their lifetime.

But you can help. YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish and Allstate Northwest Region hope you will join us for a special event to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness month.

On Monday, October 24 from 11:30 to 1:00 at YWCA Greenbridge Learning Center you will learn how to approach and talk to a family member, friend or co-worker you suspect is a victim of domestic violence. Learn what you can do.

We have been challenged by The Allstate Foundation to have at least 100 people attend the event. For every attendee, the Foundation will donate $100 to the YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish to fund programs that support domestic violence victims.

Please make sure to take a look at purplepurse.com. Cleverly disguised as an internet store, the site contains information on domestic violence. We will share more about the story of the purple purse at the event. You can show your support by wearing purple and/or bringing a purse to donate. Please use your social media networks to spread the word. On Twitter, follow “@ywcawork” and make sure to use #purplepurse in your tweets.

RSVP today and help end domestic violence.

When: Monday, October 24 11:30 am to 1:00 pm (lunch provided)

Where: YWCA Greenbridge Learning Center
9720 8th Ave. SW, South
Seattle, 98106

Promise Neighborhoods is a place-based initiative created by the federal Department of Education and inspired by the Harlem Children’s Zone. The vision of this program is that all children and youth growing up in a Promise Neighborhood have access to a continuum of great schools and strong systems of family and community support that will prepare them to attain an excellent education and successfully transition to college and a career. The purpose of Promise Neighborhoods is to significantly improve the educational and developmental outcomes of children and youth in our most distressed communities, and to transform those communities.
